A new photography exhibition commissioned by Fernbank Museum reveals Georgia’s golden history through the work of students at Atlanta’s Portfolio Center. Georgia’s Heart of Gold features 41 photographs that showcase gold’s local and historic influence—from modern-day gold panners to gold medal winners, from gold records to gold “grillz,” and from Dahlonega’s gold mines to the State Capitol’s gold dome. Rare Dugout Canoe

Pay a visit to First Georgians (Upper Level) and you’ll notice a striking new addition—a 17-foot-long dugout canoe that was donated to the Museum in 2007 by international forest products company Rayonier. This historic find—one of only a few ever documented in Georgia—was discovered submerged in sand and shallow water on Rayonier property adjacent to the Satilla River in Ware County in 2006. The canoe dates to approximately 1680-1740.

Giants of the Mesozoic

A prehistoric battle of gigantic proportions unfolds in the permanent exhibition Giants of the Mesozoic, filling the Museum’s Great Hall. This exhibition recreates life in the badlands of Patagonia, Argentina, where the largest dinosaurs in the world were unearthed.
